Project One:

Wentworthville Community Garden Storage Shed

When you live in the hustle and bustle of a concrete jungle, there’s no lovelier escape than relaxing with friends or tending to a vegetable patch in the fresh air of a community garden. These plant-packed public spaces bring the whole neighbourhood together!

To create a green oasis in the middle of a big city, you need a strong steel shed that will store and protect your fertilisers and gardening tools. That’s why the awesome people behind Wentworthville Community Garden put in the time and effort to fundraise and organise council funding for a much-needed shed. After a successful meeting where we delved into the exact requirements, Ted and his team decided to count on ShedPro to build their perfect shed.

As we’ve all done at some point, Ted underestimated the time needed to complete the new shed before their open day promotion. To make matters worse, the weather turned on us, muddying the site for an extended period of time before the big open day (If you look closely at the photograph of our boys on the final day of install, their work boots show just how much mud they had been trudging through!). With the open day fast approaching and the shed having only just been delivered, time was not on our side. Whilst it was a relatively small shed, there were no days left in the building schedule to install it.

Project Two:

Custom Bus Site

It traditionally survived on large public transport contracts but due to tighter margins and a flood of imported buses, the company fell on hard times and was handed over to administrators in 2018. Like so many Australian businesses that have fallen by the wayside, Custom Bus was heading out of business until a go-getter named Scott Dunn stepped in and purchased the company just in time.

Although saved in the eleventh hour, Custom Bus was forced to downsize from its vast commercial site at Villawood to smaller premises at St. Mary's. Luckily, the Dunn group were on the ball, hiring back as many of the original staff as possible (and with a pay rise!). However, the new site needed a lot of work and more space to get everything operational again. Scott wanted another building that could be utilised outside of the main factory to showcase their custom-designed buses and fit outs to prospective clients. As experts in commercial shed creation, ShedPro was chosen to design and install the new building.

The team at Custom Bus are overjoyed with their tailor-made commercial steel shed and the extra space it provides. This large, open plan design includes a vast showcasing space, as well as an upstairs office for client meetings so that Scott and his team can lock in sales then and there. We’re confident that this new building will achieve great results, bringing in more business than ever before. While it has only recently been completed and is still in the process of being fitted out as this article is prepared, Scott has big plans for the new site and we hope to return to complete any other structures that he needs.

Project Three:

Green Camel Shed

This was one of the most interesting and challenging jobs that ShedPro completed in 2017. Green Camel is an organic farming company and its Cobbitty site is used mainly to grow tomatoes and herbs – one of their chief customers is Woolworths, so you can imagine the quantities they’re churning out!

Godfrey had a lot on his plate when he got in touch with our team. Green Camel specialise in growing organic produce all over Australia and had contracted Godfrey as the man to get it done due to his renowned reputation and global experience in organic farming and chemistry. However, obtaining council approval for the new organic herb and tomato farm was easier said than done – red tape and shed building weren’t Godfrey’s speciality, so ShedPro guided him through the process as much as possible. Councils are pretty wary of horticulture techniques that use cutting edge technology, as they aim to ensure that no watercourses or land end up polluted by escaping fertiliser. While fertilisers may be great for your tomatoes, they can be harmful to local rivers and water catchments. Once the town planning and approval experts had managed this tedious and lengthy approval process, we stepped in to get the packing and distribution shed set up and completed.

The innovative methods that Green Camel use to grow and fertilise their produce are still wrapped in secrecy… Essentially, they are a fish farm as well, with huge stocks of Barramundi living on site in tanks. The excrement produced by these fish is fed hydroponically through their extensive glasshouse growing sheds. The plants are only touched by human hands at the time of planting and the rest of the process is robotic. The vegetables are grown in glass houses until they are ready to harvest, at which point the produce moves along a conveyor belt through a walkway and into the packing shed to be shipped out. ShedPro was tasked with creating the COLORBOND® walkways for this conveyor belt, stretching from the glass house to the packing shed. The biggest challenge was, of course, joining the COLORBOND® steel to the other structures (and ensuring that the crane didn’t drop a big length of steel onto a very expensive glass building!).

Operations at Cobbitty farm are going really well, with its innovative organic farming processes being featured in various news and current affairs programs.

We even returned to the site in 2018 to complete some awnings and would be more than happy to work with this great company yet again if they need any more structures.

Project Four:

American Barn

As director of a renowned events management company in Sydney, Peter spends long days and nights putting up with the dramas of eccentric and demanding clients, trying to get their parties, functions or events just right.

Peter’s favourite place to escape this madness is his vast rural property near Goulburn. When Peter’s wedding rolled around, he decided to revamp the farm and throw an extravagant party away from the bright lights of the harbour. Peter and his partner wanted to build an American barn for their big day, fitting it out with a cowboy theme complete with hay bales, horses and chickens. As the property is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, they were concerned about guest accommodation for the weekend-long event. They decided that the only option was to build on-site guest units along with the heritage-style barn that would be used for the reception.

Peter had a lot of trouble finding a company to take care of the entire job from start to finish so he was extremely relieved when we told him that we would handle everything.

The design and install of both buildings had to be completed quickly, as the inspiration for this theme had hit him late in the game. Luckily, compared to inner-city councils, planning rules are less rigid where Peter’s property is located so we were able to get things moving. Peter had a clear vision of his dream barn – a fully galvanised building with touches of manor red in the doors to create an old barn look.

Luckily, when the suppliers informed us that there was no warranty on galvanised products when it comes to guarding against rust spots formed on the sheeting, his response was “Great, it will look better with a bit of rust on it!” When we tried to order Peter’s unusual half-round galvanised gutter and none of the main steel supply companies could supply it, Metroll went the extra mile to outsource the products so that he got his flashy guttering. After this, the barn went up without a hitch.

Next on the list was the accommodation units. Long, narrow buildings were divided into four units with internal walls and topped off with a verandah.

These units were built on a hill slope, on piers and mezzanine floors with timber rather than slabs. The entire project came together beautifully and Peter even had the buildings fitted out with antique timber windows and doors.

Many of Peters friends must have decided they like the cowboy life – since the wedding, ShedPro has completed five more rural sheds of various size and design for Peter’s friends. Peter’s business has also been booming, so much so that they need to store the ever increasing collection of furniture and decorative party props on their farm. Peter rang us up a year after his wedding to organise the building of a huge storage shed with a 30° roof pitch. Once again, he knew exactly what he wanted and we think that the photos are proof he got it right again! The business must be growing more than ever because Peter has recently gotten in touch a third time, wanting yet another shed even bigger than the last.
